Wrangell Outfitters is a premier guide outfit in the Wrangell Saint Elias National Park and Preserve. We offer a wild ride through the biggest National Park in the United States. Whether you want to experience this land by raft, horse, on foot with a backpack, or on your yoga mat the luxury of the place is in its wilderness. Horsfeld is a historic gold mine site staked in the early 1900's and today it exists as a rustic wilderness camp where traditional Alaskan activities set root. Not only can you come enjoy this place for it's wilderness and remote activities, but you can come and be a part of history in your stay as we take you along horse trails used first packed during the Klondike Gold Rush.
As native Alaskan's we represent this land as our home and as our heritage. By living here year round we are able to experience the wilderness of this landscape. The camp is completely off the grid where drinking water still comes from the spring, vegetables are grown in the greenhouse for food, and berries are harvested from the hillsides in the fall. We source our food from the local flora, and hunting is a regular part of our lives and livelihoods as Alaskans. We invite you to come experience this as one of the few wild places left today.
Will Koehler is a lifelong Alaskans whose obsession with the wilds began at an early age. Growing up in the Alaska Range, Will and his brother Mark were ever pursuing wild things and wild places. As kids they ran long trap lines with dog teams and explored their huge backyard extensively with horses. Their upbringing in Alaska's intense terrain has honed their skills as guides and given them rich knowledge at a wide angle. Their sharp eyes for the wildlife will surely open yours to the details of the landscape in ways you have never experienced. As the owner, Will guides the trips and runs the logistics of the outfit, and Mark brings his skills as a hunting guide and bush pilot to the business. Together they make a tough team to beat. These two provide an authentic understanding of Alaska's intense history and lifestyle, and their stories will keep you on your seat, even in times when they have flown off theirs.
Jaia Koehler came to Horsfeld for the first time to be a summer cook. 6 days later, Will proposed to her and the rest is history. She embraces the simple but sometimes challengeing life that goes into raising a family and hosting clients in such a wild location with grace and class. She comes from a long line of pioneers who settled in the western unitied states in the mid 1800's. Her mother is a professional caterer and chef and Jaia learned from her how to put a good meal on the table.
